Jade rollers have become a very mainstream beauty staple and seem to be endorsed by everyone from celebrities and beauty bloggers to Sephora salespeople and your closet friend. Why though? What is the hype? Is it really worth it?
Let’s first look at the origins of jade rollers (Here is the one I use) and then move into exactly how they can benefit your complexion and more specifically, the lymphatic system.
A jade roller is a massage tool used to help drain the lymphatic system resulting in decreased inflammation and swelling, and overall improved circulation.
History
Jade rollers date back to the 1600s during the Qing Dynasty in China. They were used by the royal family as a means of cleansing stagnant energy and improving circulation. The stone jade is said to have healing properties that purify energy, promote positive energy and offer muscle relaxation.
They blew into mainstream beauty around 2016 with seemingly everyone running to get their hands on one. Though they are modestly popular in China these days, most Chinese aren’t overly interested in using them. To modern Chinese, they are more of a novelty beauty product that their mothers and grandmothers used.
The Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that cover the entire body and are responsible for the circulation of fat, bacteria, and waste from tissues. The lymphatic system regulates fluids within the body and releases antibodies that kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells.
Lymph nodes are the main connection points within the lymphatic system. Essentially, they are the filtration part of the system. They are located in the throat, chest, armpit, elbow, and groin. As the fluid is moved through the lymph nodes they are filtered for any bacteria, viruses or harmful cells. If anything abnormal is detected the nodes produce immune cells that attack the germs.
When the lymphatic system is not working properly the body is not able to effectively protect itself from disease and viruses along with many other things. Some conditions that can result in a poor system are:
-
-
- Chrohn’s disease
- Hodgkin’s disease
- Tonsiilitis
- Infection
- Lymphoedema
- Damaged lymph nodes
-
The main way to tell if there is a blockage or poor circulation to the lymphatic system is swelling. You will notice swelling that can be temporary or more long-term depending on how damaged the system is. The most common places swelling will occur are in the arms, legs, fingers, and toes.
Place your jade roller in the fridge or freezer for several hours before using it. This will tighten the skin and reduce puffiness faster. It also feels very relaxing.
The Connection
Now that you understand the lymphatic system and the importance it has on your overall health let’s see where the jade roller comes in.
Using a jade roller on the face stimulates circulation and encourages the movement of stagnant fluid. The main reason your face looks puffy is that there is fluid that is not properly circulating. Correctly using a jade roller will:
-
-
- Drain excess fluid
- Reduce puffiness and under-eye bags
- Boost elasticity
- Enhance tone and definition
- Reduces fine lines
-
Be sure to follow the direction of the diagram above. This is what will offer maximum results as it mimics the natural flow of fluid in the face. As with any beauty routine, it is important to maintain it regularly. Use a jade roller at least once a day to support the lymphatic system and to also enhance your complexion.
